Visual Habitat Types
Your habitat's look matters. CrittrHavens offers several visual styles to match your real-world setup:

Each type comes with multiple visual options. Browse the gallery and pick what speaks to you - the choice shapes how your habitat appears in your haven view.
Slot Management Made Easy
Haven slots are your building blocks. Start with the basic layout, then customize as your collection grows.

Both crittrs and plants show up in the habitat's overview, giving you the full picture of your mini-ecosystem.
Substrate Tracking
Substrate is the foundation of great habitats. CrittrHavens tracks both the type and whether you're running bioactive.
Substrate Types
Track exactly what you're using as your base layer:
- Coconut Fiber - Classic choice for tropical setups
- ABG Mix - Perfect for bioactive terrariums
- Cypress Mulch - Great for temperate species
- Paper Towels - Simple and clean for quarantine
- Reptile Carpet - Easy to clean reusable option
- Aspen Shavings - Popular for many snake species
- Orchid Bark - Natural option for humid environments
- Sphagnum Moss - Excellent moisture retention
- Peat Moss - Natural acidic substrate option
- Custom blends - Mix your own and track the recipe
Bioactive Status
Toggle bioactive on for habitats running:
- Live plants that process waste naturally
- Cleanup crews like isopods and springtails
- Natural soil ecosystems that self-maintain
Bioactive setups often need different care schedules, and CrittrHavens adjusts recommendations accordingly.
💡 Managing Equipment? Once you've set up your habitat, track all your gear with our Inventory Management system - perfect for monitoring UVB bulb warranties, heater performance, and filter replacements.
Setting Care Frequencies
Consistent care keeps habitats thriving. Set frequencies that match your real routine.
Cleaning Frequency
- Open habitat settings from the detail view
- Set cleaning frequency using the easy picker (daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly)
- Save your schedule - CrittrHavens tracks when cleaning is due
Misting Frequency
Perfect for tropical setups that need regular humidity boosts:
- Configure misting schedule in the habitat settings
- Choose frequency based on your species needs
- Track completion using the misting action on the habitat
Feeding Schedules
Some habitats have feeding routines separate from individual crittrs:
- Set habitat-level feeding for community tanks or shared feeding areas
- Pick your schedule that works for the whole ecosystem
- Mark as complete when you feed the habitat community
Understanding Frequencies vs Tasks
CrittrHavens separates frequencies from tasks to keep things flexible:
- Frequencies set your intended schedule (how often you plan to clean)
- Tasks track actual completion (when you actually cleaned)
This lets you adjust schedules without losing your completion history. Change frequency anytime - your past care logs stay intact.
Habitat Maintenance Best Practices
Keep your digital habitats as well-maintained as your physical ones:
Regular Updates
- Update frequencies as your routine evolves
- Reassign crittrs when you move animals between setups
- Refresh photos to show habitat changes over time
Organization Tips
- Use descriptive names that clearly identify each habitat
- Group similar setups in the same haven for easy management
- Split complex arrangements into logical sub-slots
Care Tracking
- Mark tasks complete right after real-world maintenance
- Check status indicators for quick health overviews
- Review care logs to spot patterns and improve routines
Your CrittrHavens habitat management system grows with your collection, keeping everything organized and ensuring nothing gets forgotten.
