Habitat Setup & Configuration

Build the perfect home for your crittrs with smart setup tools and automated care tracking. Your pets deserve spaces that work as hard as you do.

Creating habitats that actually help your pet care routine? CrittrHavens handles the complex stuff so you can focus on what matters - keeping your crittrs happy and healthy.

Understanding Habitats

Habitats are individual enclosures within your havens. Think terrariums, vivariums, aquariums - any setup where your pets actually live. Each habitat tracks its own care schedule, setup details, and inhabitants.

New to CrittrHavens? Start with our Quickstart Guide to learn the basics of creating havens and habitats, then return here for detailed habitat configuration.

Habitat vs Haven

  • Haven = Your room or workspace (bedroom, office, reptile room)
  • Habitat = Individual enclosure (40-gallon terrarium, nano tank, breeding tub)

This separation lets you organize both your physical space and individual pet homes without confusion. For comprehensive haven setup and management, see our Haven Management Guide.

Habitat Types

Choose the type that matches your setup for the most accurate care tracking.

Terrarium

Dry land environments perfect for reptiles, arachnids, and desert species.

  • Best for: Bearded dragons, leopard geckos, tarantulas, snakes
  • Focus: Temperature gradients, substrate, hiding spots
  • Care emphasis: Spot cleaning, feeding schedules, temperature monitoring

Vivarium

Naturalistic setups with live plants and complex ecosystems.

  • Best for: Dart frogs, geckos, chameleons, bioactive setups
  • Focus: Humidity control, plant health, cleanup crew
  • Care emphasis: Misting, plant care, ecosystem balance

Paludarium

Half land, half water environments for amphibious species.

  • Best for: Fire salamanders, newts, mudskippers, crabs
  • Focus: Water quality, land/water balance, filtration
  • Care emphasis: Water changes, humidity, dual environment care

Aquarium

Fully aquatic environments for fish, aquatic reptiles, and amphibians.

  • Best for: Fish, axolotls, aquatic turtles, aquatic frogs
  • Focus: Water chemistry, filtration, aquascaping
  • Care emphasis: Water testing, feeding, filter maintenance

Creating a New Habitat

Setting up your digital habitat to match your physical one keeps everything organized.

  1. Tap the + button in your habitat list or from an empty haven slot
  2. Choose your habitat type based on your actual setup
  3. Pick a visual style from the image carousel - find something that matches your enclosure's look
  4. Name your habitat something memorable (Gizmo's Palace, Quarantine Tank #2, The Jungle)
  5. Set your substrate type to track cleaning needs
  6. Toggle bioactive setup if you have live plants and cleanup crew

Your habitat appears ready for pets and care scheduling. Everything's connected automatically.

Visual Customization

Selecting Habitat Images

Browse through the visual options to find something that matches your actual setup. This isn't just aesthetic - it helps you quickly identify habitats when you're checking care schedules.

Image Categories:

  • Extra Wide: Long, low setups like 40-gallon breeders
  • Wide: Standard rectangular tanks
  • Tall: Vertical setups for arboreal species
  • Extra Tall: Tower setups and paludariums

Pick based on your actual enclosure dimensions for the most realistic layout.

Custom Setup Notes

Use the description field to track important setup details:

  • Heating elements and their placement
  • Lighting schedules and types
  • Special equipment or modifications
  • Substrate depth and type details

Care Frequency Configuration

This is where CrittrHavens really shines. Set realistic frequencies and let the app handle the reminders.

Understanding Frequency Intervals

The app converts everything to hours internally, but you set what makes sense:

Hours: 6, 12, 18, 24

  • Perfect for frequent feeding (baby animals, aquatic species)
  • Short-term medication schedules
  • Critical monitoring periods

Days: 2-7 days

  • Standard feeding for most adult reptiles
  • Spot cleaning schedules
  • Regular health checks

Weeks: 1-4 weeks

  • Deep cleaning schedules
  • Substrate changes
  • Equipment maintenance

Setting Up Care Schedules

Cleaning Frequency

How often does this habitat need attention?

  • Daily: High-bioload aquariums, breeding setups
  • 2-3 Days: Active species, frequent feeders
  • Weekly: Low-maintenance setups, established bioactive
  • Bi-weekly: Mature ecosystems, snake setups

Misting Frequency

For humidity-dependent species:

  • Multiple daily: Dart frogs, some chameleons
  • Daily: Most tropical species
  • Every few days: Semi-arid species
  • Weekly: Desert species with seasonal humidity

Measurement Tracking

Regular monitoring schedules:

  • Daily: Critical recovery periods, breeding projects
  • Weekly: Growing juveniles, new setups
  • Monthly: Established adults, stable environments

Smart Frequency Tips

Start Conservative: It's easier to reduce frequency than catch up on missed care. Begin with more frequent checks and adjust down as you establish routines.

Match Your Schedule: Align care days with your actual availability. If you're busy midweek, set weekend-heavy schedules.

Seasonal Adjustments: Many species need different care frequencies during breeding, brumation, or seasonal changes. Update as needed.

Assigning Pets to Habitats

Single Pet Assignment

Most habitats house one primary resident. Select your pet from the dropdown during habitat creation or edit later.

🐍 Managing Pets? For detailed pet profiles, species tracking, and comprehensive crittr management workflows, see our Pet Management Guide.

Multi-Pet Habitats

Some setups house multiple animals:

  • Breeding pairs or groups
  • Community tanks
  • Temporary housing situations

The app tracks all residents and adjusts care recommendations accordingly.

Unassigned Habitats

Keep some habitats unassigned for:

  • Quarantine purposes
  • Breeding setups being prepared
  • Future expansion planning

Habitat Management

Editing Habitat Details

Long press any habitat to update:

  • Name changes as your setup evolves
  • Care frequency adjustments based on experience
  • Visual updates if you renovate the enclosure
  • Pet reassignment when animals move

Moving Between Havens

Drag habitats between different havens when you physically relocate enclosures. The app maintains all care history and schedules. For detailed slot management and drag-and-drop workflows, see our Slot Management Guide.

Daily Care Integration

Once your habitat is configured, track care activities through the Care Center where you can monitor cleaning schedules, misting needs, and feeding requirements with visual status indicators.

Archiving Old Setups

When you decommission a habitat:

  1. Unassign any pets first
  2. Review care logs - export if needed
  3. Archive the habitat to preserve history
  4. Delete only if no historical data is worth keeping

Bioactive Setup Features

Enabling Bioactive Mode

Toggle this for naturalistic setups with live plants and cleanup crews. This unlocks additional tracking features:

  • Plant health monitoring
  • Cleanup crew population notes
  • Ecosystem balance indicators
  • Specialized care recommendations

Bioactive Care Considerations

  • Longer establishment periods before full stocking
  • Different cleaning approaches (less disruption)
  • Plant care integration with animal care
  • Seasonal ecosystem changes

Best Practices

Accurate Initial Setup

Take time to configure everything correctly from the start. Changing core settings later can disrupt established care patterns and historical data.

Regular Review and Adjustment

As you gain experience with specific animals and setups, refine your care frequencies. The app learns your patterns and provides better recommendations over time.

Documentation

Use habitat descriptions to note important details that affect care:

  • Special behavioral observations
  • Equipment quirks or maintenance needs
  • Seasonal care pattern changes
  • Veterinary recommendations

Backup Important Configurations

For complex or successful setups, note your configuration details somewhere safe. This helps when setting up similar habitats or troubleshooting problems.
